Seven Tips to Help You Survive March Madness Together

Can love and basketball coexist?

If you’ve seen the 2000 romantic movie Love & Basketball, you’d think so. The film, starring Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps, shares the story of neighbors who pursue basketball careers and eventually fall in love.

But in the middle of March, it may seem like the challenge is too much to overcome. They call it March Madness for a reason, right?

What if one person in your marriage likes to watch the endless slew of games and the other doesn’t? How do you keep the peace and keep up with that near-perfect bracket you filled out to magically guide your team to the championship game?

How can couples successfully manage March Madness when one can’t wait for the next game, and the other sees it as an intrusion on life? Here are some “plays” to run that if basketball seems to be taking over your marriage.

Seven Ways to Make the Most of March Madness
  • Have a conversation and agree on a reasonable number of games to take in during the tournament. Basketball-lovers, be realistic. For those in the take-it-or-leave-it category, don’t be stingy. The tourney only comes around once a year.
  • If you are the basketball-loving spouse, write the days and times of the games you’re planning to watch on the calendar. If you’re not a fan, commit to seeing at least part of one game with your spouse each week. (You may find that you enjoy watching them enjoy the game as much as they enjoy the game.)
  • If you don’t know (and perhaps don’t care) about all the rules of the game, try reading up a bit on how basketball works, or try asking questions. Warning: Only do this during time-outs or commercials.
